Brutal Attack Outside Harold Wood Station: Pensioner Killed in Shocking Assault
A 23-year-old man, Sekai Miles, has been handed a hospital order with restrictions after he savagely murdered 87-year-old pensioner Bernard Fowler outside Harold Wood Station in East London. The horrifying attack took place on February 27, 2024.
Gruesome Assault Details Revealed
At the Old Bailey, the court was told Miles launched an unprovoked, brutal assault on Mr. Fowler as he headed out to collect free newspapers for the community.
- Miles gouged out Mr. Fowler’s eye.
- He struck him 19 times on the head with the victim’s own walking stick.
- He stamped on the pensioner’s head eight times while he lay helpless on the ground.
Prosecutor Benjamin Aina KC condemned the attack as “truly shocking and appalling.” He added:
“After attacking Mr. Fowler, the defendant walked away, only to return and stand over the victim in a triumphant stance.”
Arrest and Troubled Mental Health History
Police quickly arrived but found Miles fleeing with a bloody walking stick in one hand and his trainers in the other.
He was arrested after a brief struggle. Inside his rucksack, officers found religious leaflets and a Bible with highlighted passages about lost and restored sight. One leaflet questioned:
“Are you saved? If you died today: Heaven or Hell?”
The court heard Miles has a history of paranoid schizophrenia. He had used synthetic cannabis (Spice) and stopped his prescribed medication, insisting he had been “saved by God.”
Hospital Order Imposed Amid Mental Health Failures
Judge Judy Khan KC ruled Miles must be treated at Broadmoor secure psychiatric hospital under a hospital order with restrictions. Experts expect him to remain there for years before release is considered.
Defense lawyer Brenda Campbell KC criticised missed chances for intervention, noting clear signs of Miles’ mental decline and religious delusions were overlooked.
Community in Shock and Mourning
The victim’s family described Bernard Fowler as a “kind and caring man” with a sharp sense of humour. His son, Darrin Fowler, said:
“My father was a loving, thoughtful, and supportive figure in our lives. It does not feel real, and I cannot process that he is gone. He was my wingman and confidante.”
Local residents are outraged and fearful. One called it “terrifying” that someone so unstable was roaming the streets untreated.
The Metropolitan Police offered condolences and stressed the vital need for improved mental health care.
Flowers now mark the attack site at Harold Wood as the community mourns a beloved pensioner lost to a senseless act of violence. Updates on Sekai Miles’ treatment and possible release will follow.
