Car Blaze Sparks Chaos at Gatwick’s North Terminal

Flames Erupt in Car Park

A car went up in smoke at Gatwick Airport just before 1:30pm today, forcing a sudden halt to access at the North Terminal. Flames quickly spread to the entry and exit barriers of the terminal’s car park, sparking panic among travellers and staff alike.

Firefighters Race to the Scene

West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service swung into action, sending two fire engines to douse the blaze. Eyewitness Simon Doce, who had just left the terminal, said: “I could smell the fire as soon as I walked out, then as we walked further round, we saw the vehicle fully on fire.”

The fire was under control and extinguished by shortly after 2pm. Crews stayed on-site to monitor for flare-ups and secure the area.

Terminal Access Restored, Yet Caution Urged

A Gatwick Airport spokesperson confirmed the North Terminal car park is now open and operations have returned to normal. However, West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service urged locals and travellers to steer clear of the area for safety.

“We are still urging residents living nearby to avoid the area near the North Terminal car park to ensure the safety of the public, staff and other airport users,” the fire service warned.

Cause Unknown as Police Join Investigation

The cause of the fire remains a mystery. Sussex Police have been informed and an investigation is underway. Thankfully, no injuries have been reported.
