Wiltshire Police have launched an investigation following a major fire that broke out at Old Sarum airfield on Thursday evening, destroying two historic hangars and damaging several other buildings.
Emergency services were called to the scene shortly after 6pm on 17 April, as flames tore through two partially derelict wartime hangars. The Hangar 3 café, located on site, was also destroyed in the blaze. A nearby building used by another business sustained significant fire damage.
A police and fire investigation is now underway to determine the cause of the fire, which is currently being treated as unexplained.
In a statement released today, Wiltshire Police said:
“We are appealing for anyone who may have been in the area shortly before the fire started to get in touch. Any information, no matter how small, could be vital to our enquiries.”
Officers are asking witnesses or anyone with dashcam footage from the vicinity to contact them on 101, quoting log number 262 of 17/04. Alternatively, information can be passed anonymously via Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
Police are also urging members of the public to avoid the affected area while emergency services continue their work at the scene.
The Old Sarum airfield is a historic site with roots dating back to World War I and is home to a number of aviation-related businesses and facilities. The destruction of the hangars is a significant loss for the local community and heritage.
