A man has been charged with attempted murder after a vicious knife attack outside a Co-op in Gedling left a man in his 30s fighting for his life.
The victim, who suffered multiple stab wounds, was attacked around 10:30pm on 6 May 2025 on Westdale Lane. He remains in hospital in a serious condition, according to Nottinghamshire Police.
Attempted Murder and More: Suspect Charged
Simon McHugh, 45, of Harrogate Road, Carlton, was arrested the next day. He now faces:
- Attempted murder
- Possession of a bladed article in a public place
- Burglary
- Theft of a motor vehicle
Police say McHugh is also connected to a burglary in Burton Joyce the same night.

Investigators have tied McHugh to six serious offences in Derbyshire just a day earlier on 5 May:
- Two counts of false imprisonment
- Assault by beating
- Knife possession
- Two counts of making threats to kill

McHugh remains in custody and is due to appear at Nottingham Magistrates’ Court on 12 May 2025. Given the gravity of the charges, the case is expected to be escalated to Nottingham Crown Court.
