Man Charged After Brutal Knife Attack Outside Gedling Co-op
A man in his 30s is fighting for life after a vicious stabbing outside a Co-op in Gedling. The horrific attack left the victim with multiple stab wounds on Westdale Lane at around 10:30pm on 6 May 2025.
Nottinghamshire Police confirmed the victim remains in serious condition in hospital.
Suspect Held Over Attempted Murder and More
Simon McHugh, 45, from Carlton, was arrested the following day. He now faces a string of charges including:
- Attempted murder
- Possession of a bladed article in public
- Burglary
- Theft of a motor vehicle
Police say McHugh is also linked to a burglary in Burton Joyce on the same night.
Crime Spree Spans Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire
Authorities connected McHugh to six serious offences in Derbyshire on 5 May, just a day before the stabbing. Charges include:
- Two counts of false imprisonment
- Assault by beating
- Knife possession
- Two counts of making threats to kill
The Crown Prosecution Service is coordinating a multi-county effort to tackle the crime wave.

The stabbing has shaken Gedling residents, with many voicing alarm at the spike in knife crime on social media.
Nottinghamshire Police sealed off the Westdale Lane scene for hours to gather forensic evidence.
Chief Superintendent Ian Matthews said: “Knife crime has devastating consequences. We’re doing everything possible to ensure those responsible face justice.”
Man in Custody, Court Date Set
McHugh remains in custody and is set to appear at Nottingham Magistrates’ Court on 12 May 2025. Given the grave nature of the charges, the case will likely escalate to Nottingham Crown Court.
