Violent Attack in Middleton: Police Seek Witnesses After Man Assaulted

Greater Manchester Police have launched an urgent witness appeal following the brutal attack on a 62-year-old man in Middleton, Rochdale, on the evening of Tuesday, 6 May 2025.

Man Attacked from Behind Near Middleton Cemetery

The assault happened at around 8:30pm close to the roundabout where Green Lane meets Stanycliffe Lane, near Middleton Cemetery. The victim was struck from behind and knocked unconscious. The attacker then verbally abused the man before fleeing the scene.

Emergency services took the victim to hospital, where he was treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

Quiet Neighbourhood Stunned by Sudden Violence

The usually low-crime residential area has been left rattled. Crime statistics confirm that Middleton records fewer violent incidents than the national average, making the attack all the more shocking for locals.

Stanycliffe Lane, a hub for the community with landmarks like the SPAR store and Stanycliffe Community Centre, is particularly shaken. Residents worry about safety, especially given the close proximity to Middleton Cemetery.

Roch Valley Radio took to X (formerly Twitter) to spread the word, prompting community members to share and discuss the incident.

Police Urge Anyone Who Saw Something to Speak Up

Greater Manchester Police are appealing for anyone who was near Green Lane or Stanycliffe Lane around 8:30pm on 6 May 2025 to come forward.

“If you were in the area or saw anything unusual, we want to hear from you,” a GMP spokesperson said.

  • Contact police on 101, quoting log 3339 of 06/05/2025

The community’s help could be vital in catching the attacker and restoring safety to the area.
