Tragic Blaze at Bicester Heritage: Three Dead, Including Two Firefighters

Firefighters Jennie Logan and Martyn Sadler Among Victims

Thames Valley Police have named the three victims who died in a devastating fire at the Bicester Heritage site on Thursday night (15 May).

Two heroic firefighters lost their lives battling the blaze at Bicester Motion on Buckingham Road. They were joined by a member of the public who also tragically died. The fire broke out around 6:40pm, triggering a massive emergency response with ten fire engines rushed to the scene.

  • Jennie Logan, 30, of Oxfordshire County Council Fire and Rescue Service
  • Martyn Sadler, 38, who served with both Oxfordshire Fire and Rescue and London Fire Brigade
  • David Chester, 57, a local Bicester resident

Two other firefighters remain seriously injured in hospital. Family Liaison Officers are providing support to all the victims’ families.

Police Launch Investigation Into Unexplained Deaths

Thames Valley Police’s Major Crime Team has opened an investigation into the unexplained deaths. Though the fire isn’t currently being treated as a criminal matter, detectives pledge to “follow the evidence wherever it leads.”

Assistant Chief Constable Tim Metcalfe said: “This is an absolute tragedy and my thoughts — and the thoughts of everyone at Thames Valley Police — are with the families, friends and colleagues of Jennie Logan, Martyn Sadler, and David Chester.”

Emergency crews continue to douse hotspots and the site remains cordoned off for several days. Police will maintain a visible presence to reassure the community and protect the scene.

Community in Mourning

Tributes have poured in from across the nation as locals, emergency workers, and public figures honour the bravery of the victims. However, the families have requested privacy at this difficult time.

Candles, flowers, and heartfelt notes now line the entrance to Bicester Motion, a heritage hub that hosts over 50 classic car and aviation businesses.

What Happens Next?

  • Investigators will start on-site inquiries once fire crews declare it safe.
  • A book of condolence has opened at St Edburg’s Church in Bicester. A community memorial service is planned soon.
  • The cause of the fire remains unknown.
