Out-of-control teen handed jail after knife e-bike robbery in Cambridge park

Teen terrorises Cherry Hinton Rec with knife

A 16-year-old boy, branded “totally out of control” by a judge, has been locked up for two years and four months in a youth detention centre. He carried out a terrifying knifepoint robbery on an e-bike at Cherry Hinton Rec, Cambridge. The violent attack unfolded at 6:25 PM on April 2.

The offender, with a 16-year-old accomplice, confronted a 15-year-old rider. Armed with a large kitchen knife, the main attacker tried to stab the victim and wrestle the e-bike from him.

The brave victim fought back, sustaining minor injuries to his face, hands, and abdomen but managed to escape with the knife, which he tossed into a bush.

Captured on camera – police act fast

A nearby bystander filmed the shocking assault, helping police nab both teens the next day. Video evidence played a key role in their swift arrest.

Harsh sentences and stern words at Cambridge Crown Court

At Cambridge Crown Court on May 21, the primary offender pleaded guilty to robbery and carrying a knife in public. Judge Andrew Hurst slammed his reckless behaviour:

“You were wholly reckless with a highly dangerous weapon… the only way to ensure you might ‘see sense’ is a period in custody.”

The second teen, from Little Shelford, received a two-year youth rehabilitation order, a six-month curfew, and 10 reparation sessions.

Police urge crackdown on knife crime as community calls for action

Cambridgeshire Constabulary warned:

“This case is another stark reminder of the dangers of knife crime. We will continue to pursue those who carry weapons and bring them to justice.”

The stolen e-bike has now been recovered. Local community groups demand more patrols and youth intervention services to stop violence in the area before it spirals further out of control.
