Police Pursuit Sparks Fatal Smash
A 57-year-old man has tragically died after being hit at a bus stop in Southwark, London, during a police chase in the early hours of Sunday, May 25. The fatal collision has left the local community reeling.
Officers in an unmarked Metropolitan Police vehicle spotted a speeding car on Southwark Bridge Road at around 5:40am and gave chase. The pursuing car crashed into a bus stop at the junction of Great Suffolk Street and Southwark Bridge Road, striking the man and causing the fatal incident.
Emergency Services Rush to Scene
Paramedics were quick to respond but despite their best efforts, the man was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver’s identity has not been publicly confirmed, and police say no other arrests have been made so far.
24-Year-Old Woman Arrested
A 24-year-old woman has been arrested in connection with the incident. Details regarding her involvement have not been released as investigations continue.
Official Probe Underway
The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) has been informed, as is standard in cases involving death after police contact. The Met Police’s Directorate of Professional Standards is also reviewing the matter.
“Our thoughts are with the family and friends of the man who has died, and with the officers and emergency services who responded to this tragic incident,” said a Met Police spokesperson.

Authorities are urging anyone with dashcam, mobile phone, or CCTV footage from the area at the time of the crash to come forward. Witnesses should call 101 quoting CAD 1535/25MAY or report information online via the Metropolitan Police website.
Road Closures Cleared, Bus Services Resume
Southwark Bridge Road was closed for several hours as forensic teams investigated the scene but all closures have now been lifted. Local bus routes have returned to normal service.
