More than 150 homes have been evacuated in Eastbourne after a suspicious bottle containing an unidentified liquid was discovered in a residential property, prompting the deployment of an army bomb squad.

Sussex Police confirmed that a planned evacuation began this morning (Tuesday, 24 June) following a response to an address on Hyde Road at 5:27pm on Monday. Officers called in the Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team as a precaution after the substance raised serious concerns.
The secure item remains under assessment, but police have closed off Hyde Road and surrounding areas while investigations continue.

Residents across six roads have been asked to evacuate:
More than 160 properties are impacted, and authorities are asking residents to vacate by 9am to allow emergency services to carry out a safe and daylight-led operation.
Police Statement
Detective Superintendent Jon Robeson of Sussex Police said:
“Our priority is to keep people safe. We are satisfied that there is no immediate risk to residents and an evacuation of nearby homes can be completed safely and effectively during daylight hours to minimise impact.”
“We appreciate the support of residents and the wider community who will be affected by the necessary precautionary actions. We will allow residents to return to their homes as soon as it is safe for them to do so.”
Uniformed officers and local agencies are on-site to assist with evacuations and provide reassurance.
Ongoing Cordon
The cordon remains in place on Hyde Road, and access to nearby streets is restricted. Forensics and bomb disposal experts are continuing to examine the contents of the bottle.
Authorities stress that public safety is the top priority, and thank residents for their patience and cooperation.
