Police Launch Probe After Kids Fall Ill at Leicestershire Summer Camp
Chaos at Stathern Camp
Police scrambled to a summer camp in Stathern, Leicestershire, on Sunday, 27 July, after several children suddenly fell ill. A swift emergency response saw officers and paramedics from East Midlands Ambulance Service rush to the scene at Canal Lane.
Emergency Triage and Hospital Visits
A triage centre was set up fast at Plungar Village Hall to check on all the youngsters. Eight children were taken to hospital as a precaution but have since been discharged. Parents and guardians have been kept updated throughout the ordeal.
Man Arrested Over Suspected Poisoning
Police arrested a 76-year-old man on suspicion of administering poison or a noxious substance with intent to injure or annoy. He remains in custody as detectives dig deeper into the shocking incident.
Detective Inspector Neil Holden said: “We understand the concern this incident will have caused to parents, guardians and the surrounding community. Please be reassured that we have several dedicated resources deployed and are working with partner agencies, including children’s services, to ensure full safeguarding is provided to the children involved. This is a complex and sensitive investigation, and we will continue to provide updates as and when we can.”
Ongoing Investigation and Community Reassurance
The East Midlands Special Operations Unit’s Major Incident Team now leads the inquiry. Uniformed officers remain in the Stathern area, actively conducting enquiries and offering reassurance to locals.
Leicestershire Police has also referred itself to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC), reflecting the seriousness of the response.
