Isle of Wight Council to Axe 150 Jobs After Budget Crisis
The Isle of Wight Council is set to slash up to 150 jobs following drastic budget cuts announced on 24 February. A formal HR1 notice has been issued, warning of potential redundancies as the council scrambles to save money.
Redundancies Loom as 82 Posts Targeted
A total of 82 posts face possible redundancy, putting 146 staff members at risk. The council has kicked off a formal 30-day consultation period with unions and affected employees. This window aims to review proposals, explore alternatives, and hopefully soften the blow.
Staff Fight Back: Voluntary Redundancy & Alternatives on Table
- Staff can suggest cost-saving ideas.
- Voluntary redundancy options will be offered.
- Where possible, displaced staff will be redeployed elsewhere in the council.
Throughout the consultation, council services will maintain normal operations. If service changes are proposed, users will be consulted beforehand.
Council Leader Speaks Out
“This is a decision which has been reached with much regret, and which has been a consequence of the extreme financial position which the council faces over the coming 12 months and into the future,” said Councillor Jonathan Bacon, Isle of Wight Council Leader.
“The council is offering a lot of support to colleagues who may be affected, but regrettably, it seems some jobs will be lost, although we will work hard to minimise the extent and effect of this.”
The timing of any service changes remains uncertain, with council promising to consult service users ahead of any adjustments.
