Travellers Swarm Gosport Leisure Centre Green – Council Faces Big Bill
Travellers Take Over Gosport Green
More than 30 travellers have descended on a large green patch behind the DC Leisure Complex on Forest Way, Gosport. The group didn’t arrive quietly – they drove right over a footpath close to a children’s play park. What started as one or two vans has ballooned into a full convoy of caravans, tarmac trucks, transit vans, and energy installation wagons. Even a washing line has gone up near the five-a-side football pitches.
Leisure Centre Staff Turn Blind Eye
Eyewitnesses say staff at the leisure complex appear to be ignoring the chaotic takeover. Police swooped early this morning, speaking to the travellers and slapping notices to quit on a battered barrier whose lock had been broken.
Council and Taxpayers Left Counting the Cost
Gosport Borough Council is already £2,000 deep in legal fees and faces more costs to clear up the mess once the travellers move on. One letter, signed by “concerned residents,” slammed the travellers for their “disrespectful behaviour” and demanded serious sanctions. Local residents, fed up with the rubbish and disruption, are calling on the council to crack down harder.
Council Vows Action Amid Fly-Tipping Scandal
A council spokeswoman said: “The police ordered the travellers to leave the site. We have issued a notice for the travellers to quit. We are aware of the fly-tipping on the site and officers from the council have been sent down to investigate.” But with tensions rising, locals want swift action – and a firm hand to keep Gosport safe.
