Havant Police Launch Operation Syren to Crush Anti-Social Behaviour
Havant’s Neighbourhood Policing Team is cracking down on rising anti-social behaviour with a bold new year-long campaign – Operation Syren. The move comes after a spike in nuisance caused by large groups of youths loitering around fast food joints in the town centre.
Town Centre Targets: Youth Nuisance Under the Spotlight
Recent dispersal orders covering the town centre and retail park successfully cleared the troublemakers – but police aren’t stopping there. Operation Syren aims to boost quality of life for residents, traders, and shoppers across Havant.
Meridian Shopping Centre, backing the campaign, is taking no chances. Manager Rob Fryer said:
“We’ve adopted a high-profile approach, equipping staff with body cameras to deter anti-social behaviour. New external CCTV gives us better coverage of the area. It’s vital people feel safe when shopping in Havant, especially as Christmas approaches.”
Police Harness Tough Powers to Tackle Trouble
Inspector Andy Clinton said tackling anti-social behaviour is a priority for Hampshire Constabulary. Sgt Ross Freemantle urged locals to report incidents, warning:
“If you cause trouble, we will act – penalties could include criminal records affecting jobs, loans, or even travel abroad. We have powers like fixed penalty notices, behaviour contracts, and criminal behaviour orders to deal with offenders.”
Here’s what cops can dish out to deal with ASB:
- Fixed penalty notices for littering, graffiti and dog fouling, issued from age 10 upwards.
- Penalty notices for disorder cover serious offences like fireworks or being drunk and disorderly, for those over 16.
- Acceptable behaviour contracts require offenders and parents to agree to behave, lasting six months or more.
- Criminal behaviour orders restrict where offenders can go or who they meet, with breaches punishable by jail or fines.
Parents and Community Must Step Up
Police stress the campaign’s success depends on everyone. Sgt Freemantle added:
“Tell us what’s happening – don’t assume someone else will. Report anti-social incidents at 123.
Havant means business – troublemakers beware!
