Fire Rips Through Southwark Railway Arch

Firefighters have scrambled to tackle a massive blaze at a railway arch on Union Street, Southwark, causing chaos on the rails. Trains at London Bridge face severe disruption as crews battle the inferno.

Huge Fire Response at Southwark Union Street

The London Fire Brigade confirmed that 10 fire engines and around 70 firefighters are on the scene. The alarm was raised at 9:29 a.m. on Wednesday, with teams from Dowgate, Whitechapel, Shoreditch, and Shadwell rushing in.

Smoke is billowing heavily into neighbouring areas, prompting emergency officials to urge locals to keep windows and doors shut. Station Commander Wayne Johnson warned, “The blaze is producing heavy smoke. Please keep your windows and doors closed.”

Rail Chaos as Services Halt at London Bridge

Network Rail revealed the fire erupted in an arch beneath the railway. The affected track between Waterloo East and London Bridge has been closed, with the railway set to remain shut until it’s safe to reopen.

“We’re working closely with the London Fire Brigade and will need to inspect the railway once the fire is put out before reopening,” Network Rail said. “Thank you for your patience.”

Southeastern confirmed disruption across all routes through London Bridge, with trains being diverted to other London terminals or cut short elsewhere.
