Chatham Rapist Jailed for 15 Years for Child Rape
A Chatham man has been locked up for 15 years after being found guilty of raping a young girl. Cameron Barnes, 27, from Westgate, was convicted of multiple sexual offences committed over five years ago.
Justice After Years of Silence
The victim bravely came forward to Kent Police, revealing she had been targeted by Barnes when she was younger. Despite Barnes denying the charges of four counts of rape and one count of sexual assault on a child, a jury at Canterbury Crown Court found him guilty on all counts.
Victim Shows Courage Facing Abuser in Court
“Despite the victim’s age, and repeatedly being told it was against her wishes, Barnes subjected her to continual sexual abuse,” said Detective Constable Emily Hooper, the lead investigator. “It took a huge amount of courage to report his offending and face him in court, especially when he tried to attack her character rather than admit his appalling crimes.”
Warning to Other Victims
Detective Hooper added: “I am pleased that we have secured justice for her and hope this result encourages other victims of unreported sexual abuse to get in contact with us so we can support them and pursue justice.”
