Missing Kayaker Found Safe After Nighttime Ordeal Off Portobello Beach
The missing kayaker feared lost off Portobello Beach has been found safe and sound overnight, thanks to tips from the public. The man had to ditch his inflatable kayak at sea and swim back to shore in the dark — but he’s unharmed.
Coastguard Launches Urgent Search
HM Coastguard sprang into action after being alerted that a man was overdue on an inflatable kayak. He had left the western end of Portobello Beach near Seafield 1 Centre around 3:15pm. At 4pm, he was last spotted about two miles offshore.
The kayaker was described as:
- Aged 30–40 years
- Approximately 175 cm tall
- Short hair, tanned complexion, slim build
- Wearing jeans and a jumper, no lifejacket
- In a bright blue inflatable kayak with white stripes, carrying a rucksack
Massive Rescue Effort Brings Relief
The search effort was massive, involving:
- Coastguard search and rescue helicopter from Inverness
- Kinghorn and Anstruther RNLI lifeboats
- Coastguard Rescue Teams from Fisherrow, South Queensferry, and North Berwick
- Police Scotland officers
Thanks to the public’s quick information, the kayaker was traced ashore overnight, safe and well after his frightening swim. HM Coastguard praised everyone involved in the rapid rescue.
