Fraudsters Target Supermarket Shoppers with Sneaky Pin-Theft Scam
Pin-Watching Crooks on the Prowl
Fraudsters have returned to UK supermarkets this week, targeting shoppers paying with debit or credit cards. Their tactic? Watching victims enter their 4-digit PIN at the till.
Team of Thieves Strike After Checkout
Often working in small teams, these scammers focus on lone female shoppers. They memorise the PIN as it’s punched in, then tail the victim to the car park.
Once the shopping is loaded and the victim is sitting in their car, one crook will tap on the driver’s window, falsely claiming there’s damage to the vehicle.
When the victim steps out to check, an accomplice slips in and steals their handbag.
Cash Stolen Before Victim Even Notices
With both the PIN and the victim’s cards, the gang quickly hits ATMs or shops online, draining accounts before anyone realises the theft.
How to Outsmart These Scammers
- Never let anyone see your PIN.
- Always shield the keypad with your hand when entering your PIN.
- Stay alert when approached in car parks after shopping.
Stay vigilant—don’t let these fraudsters make you their next target!
