Three Dead After Shocking Wrong-Way Crash on M606
A deadly crash unfolded last night on the M606 near Chain Bar roundabout at 10.45pm. A van driving the wrong way smashed head-on into a taxi, leaving three people dead and two seriously injured.
Fatal Collision Claims Two Lives at Scene
- The taxi driver, aged 28, and his 49-year-old passenger died instantly at the scene.
- This morning, an 18-year-old male passenger in the van also succumbed to his injuries in hospital.
- A 17-year-old boy in the van remains in hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries.
- The 15-year-old van driver, arrested on suspicion of causing death by reckless driving, is still hospitalised with serious injuries.
Van Suspected Stolen — Wrong-Way Driver Sparks Tragedy
The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) confirmed the van, suspected to be stolen, drove the wrong way around the roundabout before speeding onto the M606 in the opposite direction.
“The van… entered the M606 travelling in the wrong direction and collided with a taxi,” an IOPC spokesperson said.
West Yorkshire Police did not follow the van as it entered the motorway wrong way. The IOPC is now investigating the tragic crash, reviewing video footage and police actions.

“This was a tragic incident that resulted in three people losing their lives,” said IOPC Regional Director Thea Walton. “We understand this has caused considerable concern in the community, and we will conduct a thorough, independent investigation to establish exactly what happened.”
