Explosion Aftermath: Work at Redwood Grove to Take Weeks

Police are warning it will be weeks before they can fully investigate the explosion that ripped through Redwood Grove. The blast and resulting fire left the main block of flats badly damaged, keeping search teams out for now.

Meanwhile, residents in a neighbouring block may be allowed back by the end of the week as safety checks continue.

Tragic Death Confirmed, Cause Still Unknown

So far, one death has been confirmed. The victim has yet to be formally identified, but specialist officers are providing support to the next of kin.

Chief Superintendent John Murphy, leading the investigation, said: “This is a deeply distressing and traumatic incident. Our thoughts are with the person who tragically lost their life.”

He added, “We don’t yet know what caused the explosion. We are pursuing several lines of inquiry with the fire service and others.

Complex Investigation Amid Safety Concerns

Police warned the scale of the damage means the investigation at the site will be lengthy and complex. They have not ruled out the discovery of further casualties.

Firefighters have also been visiting affected residents to offer reassurance. An emergency centre at Bedford’s John Bunyan Centre remains open for support, with another information hub set to open tomorrow at the Harpur Suite in Bedford town centre, operating weekdays from 9am to 5pm.

Community Rallies and Ongoing Support

Locals have donated generously to help evacuated residents. Mental health and education teams have been running special support sessions at nearby schools.

Trevor Gradwell Smith from Bedfordshire Fire and Rescue said: “We have confirmed there was no main gas supply to the premises. We are working closely with police and specialist teams to stabilise the building.”

The Fire Service is maintaining a presence at the scene and will carry out home fire safety visits in the area.

Police & Crime Commissioner Expresses Condolences

Festus Akinbusoye commented: “I am shocked and saddened by the loss of life and send condolences to all affected. Our emergency services are working tirelessly to keep the public safe.”

Police have set up an information centre for families and residents to report concerns and get updates. Those worried about loved ones can call 0800 051 6085 for assistance.
