Chaos at Barking Boating Lake: Man Dives Into Frozen Waters to Evade Police

Emergency services swarmed Barking Boating Lake on Longbridge Road late Saturday after a man tried to cross the frozen lake — and ended up plunging into the icy water. The MET Police, London Ambulance Service’s HART team, and the Fire Service’s swift water rescue unit scrambled to the scene just before midnight.

Rescue Teams Hunt Man in Freezing Conditions

Firefighters suited up in dry gear, rowing out in a boat equipped with thermal imaging cameras to locate the stranded man. Paramedics stood ready to provide urgent care.

London Ambulance Service spokesperson: “We were called at 11:55pm to reports of an incident near Longbridge Road and Wilmington Gardens. Our response included incident officers, a fast response medic, and HART paramedics. One man was treated at the scene.”

High-Speed Police Chase Ends in Frozen Lake

The drama began earlier that night, according to the Met Police. Officers on patrol in Park Avenue, Ilford, spotted a suspicious vehicle at 11:29pm and attempted to stop it. The driver sped off, sparking a chase.

By 11:36pm, the suspect ditched his car in Lawson Close and ran on foot, pursued relentlessly by police. The chase ended dramatically in Barking Park, where the man jumped straight into the freezing lake to escape arrest.

Met Police spokesman: “The suspect was arrested on suspicion of failing to stop, possession of an offensive weapon, possession of class B drugs, and other driving offences. He was assessed by paramedics for exposure to cold water before being taken into custody.”

Man Faces Multiple Charges After Icy Escape Attempt

After rescue and medical checks, the man now faces a host of charges. The incident highlights the dangers of reckless behaviour — both on the road and on frozen lakes.
