Bluebell Railway Snags Historic Southern Region Diesel Unit

The Bluebell Railway has snapped up the legendary Southern Region DEMU No. 1305 to join its ever-growing fleet. This prized diesel-electric multiple unit was lovingly restored by the Coulsdon Old Vehicle & Engineering Society, who handed it over after a dedicated refurbishment.

From Southern Lines to Bluebell Tracks

Built in 1962 following the success of Hastings and Hampshire units, No. 1305 originally served the Southern Region’s Oxted Line to East Grinstead and Tunbridge Wells West. During its British Rail days, this unit was mainly stationed at St Leonards and Eastleigh, ending its runs at Selhurst before preservation took over. It regularly hauled commuter services from London Bridge and London Victoria to East Grinstead, possibly crossing Imberhorne Viaduct before its move to Bluebell Railway.

First Passenger Diesel Joins Bluebell Fleet

Paul Russell, Locomotive Engineering Director, said:

“I’m thrilled we’ve secured this DEMU. It fills an important piece of the puzzle to showcase Southern Region trains from the sixties and seventies. These units were iconic for East Grinstead commuters. No. 1305 will offer an economical way to bring passengers to the railway earlier, letting them enjoy a full day of steam nostalgia and sightseeing.”

DEMU No. 1305 is the first and only passenger hauling diesel owned outright by Bluebell Railway. Unlike the privately owned diesels, 1305 will be restored and maintained by the dedicated 1305 Thumper Group, operating similarly to the Railway’s successful Goods Division. This setup helps free up the Carriage & Wagon department’s resources.

Arrival Date & Donations

The exact arrival date for No. 1305 is still being confirmed. Meanwhile, a donations page will soon be launched by the Bluebell Railway Trust to support the restoration.
