Man Pleads Guilty to Manslaughter of Devoted Dad in Emsworth
A devoted father, Stephen Harrington, 47, tragically died after suffering a serious head injury in Emsworth last summer. Now, one man has admitted manslaughter, while two others face charges linked to the heartbreaking case.
Attack on Marlpit Lane Ends in Death
Stephen was found injured on Marlpit Lane on 23 July 2022. Despite being rushed to hospital, he succumbed to his injuries two days later. Police launched a murder probe and charged three men: Thomas Goldring, Joseph Butler, and Tarin Linfield.
Goldring, 21, died in December 2022, which meant his statements couldn’t be used in court. Linfield and Butler faced trial at Lewes Crown Court on 23 January 2023.
Guilty Pleas and Pending Sentencing
- Tarin Linfield, 21, pleaded guilty to manslaughter and conspiracy to steal. His murder charge was dropped.
- Joseph Butler, 23, pleaded guilty to conspiracy to steal but denied murder.
Both men remain in custody ahead of sentencing set for 3 March 2023.
The Shocking Details
The prosecution revealed the trio had gone to Marlpit Lane intending to steal from Stephen. Police concluded he died from a severe head wound, inflicted by a piece of wood during the attack.
“This is a tragic case that has resulted in the sudden and heart-breaking loss of a completely innocent and much-loved family man,” said Detective Chief Inspector Gareth Hicks.
“Only those present that night know exactly what happened. Our thoughts are with Stephen’s family and friends. We hope this manslaughter conviction brings them some closure.”
