Kevin Spaine Jailed for Life Over Brutal Manslaughter of Learoy Venner
Kevin Spaine, 43, a drifter with no fixed address, was handed a life sentence yesterday at Liverpool Crown Court. The convicted manslaughter perpetrator will serve a minimum of 18 years behind bars.
Fatal Attack on Belmont Drive
On the afternoon of Wednesday 27 July, emergency services rushed to 1 Belmont Drive after reports that Learoy Venner, 53, was found with severe head injuries. Despite frantic attempts to save him, Learoy tragically died in hospital.
A post mortem revealed he suffered “multiple forceful blows” to the head, causing a fatal brain injury. Spaine admitted to the assault after initially denying murder and trying to dodge responsibility by changing his story.
Detective Slams Spaine’s Callous Act
Detective Chief Inspector Judith Blease said: “Spaine compounded the suffering of Learoy’s family by denying murder and altering his story to avoid responsibility. We now know he repeatedly struck Learoy, then fled without alerting anyone to the devastating injuries.”
“Thanks to our extensive investigation — despite every obstacle Spaine threw up — he will serve a significant jail term. No sentence can undo the family’s pain, but today’s conviction brings some justice and hope for healing.”
Learoy’s Family Speak Out
In an emotional victim personal statement read to the court, Learoy’s siblings shared their heartbreak:
“Learning of the tragic passing of our beloved brother Learoy has been difficult for us as a family to comprehend. Learoy had a beautiful personality and such a loving, gentle soul. We loved him so much and will forever hold him close in our hearts and minds.”
“Some of us were overwhelmed by the trial and unable to attend court. Our lives are in ruins, but we are grateful to the prosecuting and family liaison teams who supported us through this agony.”
“As the case closes, we hope to find strength to bear the sorrow of losing our brother.”
