A heroic grandad has tragically died trying to save a mother and her teenage daughter swept out by monstrous three-metre waves at a Yorkshire beach.
Tragic Sea Rescue Ends in Disaster
Sarah Keeling, 45, and her 15-year-old daughter Grace drowned after Grace fell into the treacherous sea at Withernsea Beach, East Yorkshire, on Friday afternoon.
Mark Ratcliffe, 67, plunged into the savage surf to rescue them but was overwhelmed by the powerful waves and strong currents. All three were swept out to sea during the desperate rescue attempt.
Emergency services were scrambled just after 3pm following multiple reports of swimmers in distress in the wild waters. The bodies of Mr Ratcliffe and Sarah Keeling were recovered later that evening.
A massive search continued for Grace until the coastguard called it off on Saturday afternoon, leaving a shocked local community reeling.
Eyewitnesses Recall Chaotic Attempt to Save Lives
Paul Whitehead, boss of nearby Castle Café, told how a crowd frantically tried to pull the teenager to safety. “Her mum was right by my colleague’s side and both went into the water to save her,” he said.
“Her mum reached out to grab her daughter, with my colleague just inches away, but the mighty current dragged them all out.”
A waitress from the café also braved the raging sea after hearing screams but narrowly missed reaching the girl before the waves swept them all away.
Mr Whitehead called the tragedy a “tragic accident” that has left the whole town heartbroken and shell-shocked.
Community Mourns a Selfless Hero
Mark Ratcliffe’s family paid heartfelt tribute, calling him “a true selfless hero with a heart of gold, cruelly taken trying to save others.”
“So many lives are shattered that you’re gone. You were loved by so many. A loving husband, father, son, brother and the best grandad anyone could wish for. Sleep tight, we love you, we miss you.”
His son posted on Facebook: “Bye Dad, I miss you and I will never forget the true hero and role model you were.”
Local Beaches Shut as Tributes Flood In
Flowers now cover the promenade in memory of the victims. The heartbreaking deaths highlight the hidden dangers lurking along Britain’s coastlines, where calm seas can turn deadly in moments due to rogue waves and strong currents.
Emergency teams including the RNLI, Humberside Police, HM Coastguard, Fire and Rescue, and Ambulance Services battled tirelessly during the rescue. The RNLI also thanked brave members of the public who helped during the ordeal.
Withernsea remains a grieving town after a pleasant Friday outing ended in a devastating nightmare — a stark reminder of how quickly a day at the beach can turn fatal.
