BGT Star Feared Arrest Would Destroy Her Life Before Tragic Suicide, Inquest Reveals
Britain’s Got Talent Dancer’s Final Struggle
Kerri-Anne Donaldson, a semi-finalist on Britain’s Got Talent in 2014 with dance troupe Kings and Queens, feared her reputation was irreparably “tarnished” after being arrested over an alleged sexual offence, an inquest heard.
The 38-year-old from Farnborough, Hampshire, was found dead at her home on June 7, 2023, just days after being questioned by police and denying the allegations.
Fear of Prison and Public Shame
Three days before her death, Kerri-Anne was interviewed at Basingstoke Police Station about the sexual offence claims. She warned she would take her own life “if someone finds out” about the allegation.
Detective Constable Benjamin Harris told the inquest he took her threats seriously but also considered they might be an attempt to intimidate the complainant.
“In some cases, such threats are said without intent to act,” said Det Con Harris. “But it’s something we take very seriously.”
Struggle for Help and Support
Following her arrest, Kerri-Anne was put on a high-risk care plan with one-to-one observation after an overdose incident. Psychiatrists assessed her and found she was not actively suicidal at that moment and she was discharged.
Her sister, Cara Donaldson, revealed Kerri-Anne had been emotional and tearful, often overwhelmed by the allegations hanging over her. She even told her family the claims were “all constructed” and denied any guilt.
Despite the support, Kerri-Anne’s final messages indicated farewell moments, with her sister discovering her tragic death the next morning.
Tributes from Dance World
Kerri-Anne shared the stage with future Strictly pros such as Neil Jones, Katya Jones, and Kevin Clifton. They were heartbroken by her passing.
Neil Jones described her as “like a big sister” with “a cheeky laugh and a heart of gold”.
Kevin Clifton said: “Absolutely heartbroken. She was always the loveliest girl. A friend and dance partner.”
Details from the Inquest
- Cause of death recorded as hanging.
- Post-mortem showed non-fatal overdose levels of medication in her system.
- ‘You Are So Beautiful’ played on repeat at the scene.
- A folded photo of her dog was found with the words: “If only you knew how many times you had saved me.”
Remembering Kerri-Anne
Cara paid tribute: “Heart of gold, full of fun, brought happiness into my life. Career-driven, adored by family and friends, and a fantastic dance teacher loved by all.”
She added that while Kerri-Anne’s dance studio business brought usual financial worries, her dreams were clear: “She just wanted a big house, car, and to be rich and famous.”
