Blazing Engine Sparks Terror in the Skies
A United Airlines jet was forced into a hair-raising emergency landing after a fire erupted in one of its engines mid-flight. United Flight 2127 had only been airborne for about an hour, departing Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) en route to Newark, New Jersey.
Witnesses watched in horror as smoke billowed from the aircraft’s engine, prompting pilots to abruptly turn back towards LAX in a desperate rush against time.
Passengers Evacuated Amid Chaos
Onboard were 256 passengers alongside 12 crew members. Around 180 shaken travellers were evacuated quickly on the tarmac using emergency slides and airstairs. Several suffered minor injuries during the chaotic exit, with one passenger reportedly cutting a finger.
A United spokesperson confirmed: “The flight safely returned to Los Angeles to address an issue with one of the engines.”
Airport Operations Grounded to a Halt
The fiery scare caused widespread disruption at one of America’s busiest airports. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) issued an emergency ground stop, halting flights heading into LAX from major hubs like Denver, Salt Lake City, and Oakland from 11:15am to 12:30pm local time.
This led to arrival delays and some planes being forced to circle in the air for up to 30 minutes. Despite the panic, catastrophe was narrowly avoided with only minor injuries reported.
Investigation Underway
The Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner had just begun its journey to Newark Liberty International Airport when the drama unfolded. After safely landing at LAX around 11:20am, emergency crews swarmed the plane on the taxiway.
The FAA has launched a full investigation into the engine malfunction that sparked the terrifying blaze.
United Airlines is now working tirelessly to get affected passengers to their final destinations.
