A trusted prison officer’s dark secret has landed her behind bars. Zoe Oldham, 29, of HMP Risley near Warrington, was sentenced to eight months for an illicit and unlawful relationship with inmate Lewis Smith.
Secret Romance Exposed: Over 1,000 Messages and Hidden Phones
Oldham, who served five years at the prison, crossed the line in 2023 by starting a secret fling with prisoner Smith. Investigators uncovered a torrid trail of over 1,000 messages exchanged between them—plus explicit photos and videos sent by Oldham.
Things took a violent turn when Smith defended Oldham aggressively, even assaulting fellow inmates who supposedly disrespected her. A sneaky mobile phone smuggled inside a sock concealed their scandalous chats.
Judge Slams Betrayal of Trust and Discipline
“She knew such behaviour undermines prison discipline and damages trust within the service,” said the judge at Liverpool Crown Court.
Oldham pled guilty to misconduct in public office, betraying her colleagues and the prison service. Her sentence is a stark warning: betray the code, and you pay the price.
Colleagues Left Stung but Stand Strong
Oldham was once respected on the front line, but now joins the inmates she once guarded. Yet, professional women in the service remain proud and committed, refusing to be dragged down by one rogue officer.
