Prison Officer’s Secret Affair with Inmate Lands Her Behind Bars
Zoe Oldham, 29, a trusted officer at HMP Risley near Warrington, has been locked up for eight months. Her crime? Carrying on a secret and illegal romance with inmate Lewis Smith.
Over 1,000 Messages and Hidden Phones Reveal Scandal
Oldham, who worked at the prison for five years, crossed the line in 2023. Investigators uncovered more than 1,000 texts between her and Smith, including explicit photos and videos sent by her. Their communications were facilitated by a mobile phone smuggled inside a sock.
The affair turned ugly when Smith violently defended Oldham, even attacking other inmates who allegedly disrespected her.
Judge Condemns Breach of Trust and Prison Discipline
“She knew such behaviour undermines prison discipline and damages trust within the service,” said the judge at Liverpool Crown Court.
Oldham pleaded guilty to misconduct in public office, betraying both her colleagues and the prison system. Her sentence sends a clear message: break the rules, and you pay the price.
Colleagues Stung but Stand Strong Amidst the Fallout
Once a respected member of staff, Oldham now joins the inmates she once guarded. Despite this betrayal, professional women in the prison service remain proud and resolute, refusing to let one rogue officer drag them down.
