Repair work has started on the iconic Victorian Southease Bridge in East Sussex after a recent inspection spotted worn timber decking. The Environment Agency confirmed contractors are now on site, tackling the damage.
Victorian Bridge Gets Vital Timber Fix
The Southease Bridge, a key crossing over the tidal River Ouse between Lewes and Newhaven, was found to have worn deck and kerb timbers that need urgent replacement. This marks the first major repair since its full refurbishment back in 2010.
Engineering specialists Mackley began repairs on March 12. The firm expects the job to take four to six weeks, working to keep the historic bridge safe and sound.
Bridge Stays Open—But Expect Delays
The bridge will remain open during repairs. However, traffic management will be in place, with possible delays of up to 15 minutes. The bridge carries the South Downs Way and serves farm vehicles, walkers, cyclists, and horse riders on the public bridleway.
The Environment Agency thanked the public for their patience during these essential upgrades.
