Repair crews have swung into action on the iconic Victorian Southease Bridge in East Sussex after inspectors spotted worn timber decking. The Environment Agency confirmed contractors are now onsite, fixing the damage before it worsens.
Victorian Bridge Gets Urgent Timber Repairs
The Southease Bridge, a crucial crossing over the tidal River Ouse between Lewes and Newhaven, was found to have badly worn deck and kerb timbers needing immediate replacement. This is the first major fix since a full overhaul back in 2010.
Engineering experts Mackley kicked off repairs on March 12. They expect the job to run four to six weeks, ensuring the historic bridge stays safe and sound for years to come.
Bridge Stays Open — But Expect Delays
The bridge will remain open throughout the repair work. However, traffic management measures will be in place. Drivers and commuters should brace for delays of up to 15 minutes. The crossing is vital, carrying the South Downs Way and supporting farm vehicles, walkers, cyclists, and horse riders using the public bridleway.
The Environment Agency thanked the public for their patience while these vital upgrades are completed.
