Brutal Bottle Attack on Leeds Street Ends in Guilty Plea

A man has pleaded guilty to the savage attempted murder of a woman he viciously attacked with a broken bottle on Headingley High Street. The shocking assault took place on the very day his trial was set to begin.

Random Bottle Attack Outside Popular Leeds Pub

In March 2024, Ibrahim Albashir launched a brutal, unprovoked assault on a lone woman walking past the Original Oak pub in Leeds. The victim had just finished dining nearby when Albashir struck without warning.

Despite witnesses rushing to help, Albashir continued his frenzied attack until bystanders physically restrained him. Their quick action likely saved her life.

Irrefutable Evidence Pins Albashir as Attacker

The prosecution pieced together a rock-solid case using the victim’s account, multiple witness statements, medical reports, and key CCTV footage from nearby buses. An expert confirmed Albashir was fully fit and consciously intended to kill.

The assault was clearly deliberate and repeated, leaving no doubt about his brutal intent.

Sentencing Set for June 16 at Leeds Crown Court

Albashir will learn his fate at Leeds Crown Court on 16 June 2026.

Senior Crown Prosecutor Aamir Sajad said:

“This was a terrifying and entirely unprovoked attack on a young woman walking home after an evening out.

Ibrahim Albashir deliberately targeted her and inflicted serious injuries that could easily have killed her. It is testimony to the bravery of the witnesses who intervened that she is still alive today.

Albashir initially sought to avoid responsibility for his violent actions, but we worked closely with West Yorkshire Police to present clear evidence he knew exactly what he was doing.

I hope today’s outcome brings some comfort to the victim and shows the CPS will always prosecute those who commit violence against women and girls.”
