A suspected World War Two bomb sparked a major scare at Epsom and Ewell Borough Council today. Staff were rushed from the building after a member of the public dropped off the suspect device at the council’s front desk.
100m Cordons and Evacuations
Surrey Police swiftly put up a 100-metre cordon and called in the bomb squad. Nearby residents and council workers were evacuated while experts assessed the potential threat. The area around The Parade was sealed off, with officers urging the public to steer clear.
Safe Removal and Return to Normal
Thankfully, the suspected WW2 mortar shell was safely removed without incident. Surrey Police confirmed:
“The mortar shell has been safely removed from Epsom and Ewell Borough Council offices and the cordon has been lifted. Residents are able to go back to their homes and the town centre has fully reopened. Thank you to everyone for your patience and cooperation.”
The swift response helped avoid catastrophe and brought relief to anxious locals in the town centre.
