A car ploughed into pedestrians in Derby city centre on Sunday, 29 March, leaving seven people seriously injured.
Man from India Held and Questioned
Derbyshire Police are grilling a 36-year-old man, originally from India, over the incident. Detectives have secured extra time to question him as investigations press on.
All seven victims suffered serious but non-life-threatening injuries. They were rushed to the hospital, with two now discharged. No new information has been given about the remaining five.
Witnesses Describe “Absolute Carnage”
Eyewitnesses reported scenes of panic and chaos following the crash. One told UKNIP the aftermath was “absolute carnage” – with people lying on roads and pavements. Another said, “It’s so sad, everyone is so shook up. People have been crying. I just can’t believe something like this has happened.”
Many feared for friends who were in nearby bars, unsure if they had been caught up in the horror. Another witness told the Derby Telegraph, “It was such a frightening experience. We just had to get out of there. It’s just so sad.”
Counter-Terrorism Team Joins Probe
Counter-terrorism police have been brought in as part of standard procedure for an incident of this kind. Authorities are “keeping an open mind about potential motives,” Derbyshire Police said.
Claire Ward, mayor of the East Midlands, urged local communities and agencies to unite and support those affected by the shocking event.
Police Urge Public to Share Footage
Officers want anyone with CCTV, dashcam, or mobile phone footage to come forward. Quote incident 1131 of March 28 when contacting the police to assist the ongoing investigation.
