A 36-year-old man has been charged after a black Suzuki Swift ploughed into pedestrians in Derby city centre, leaving seven seriously injured during a packed Saturday night.
Chaos on Friar Gate
Sandhu Ponnachan, from Alvaston, was arrested just seven minutes after the crash at around 9.30pm last Saturday. The busy Friar Gate area was packed with pubgoers and diners when the horrific smash unfolded.
Emergency crews rushed to the scene. Seven victims were rushed to the hospital with serious injuries; four have since been discharged.
Serious Charges Filed
Ponnachan faces six counts of causing grievous bodily harm with intent, one count of attempted grievous bodily harm, dangerous driving, and possessing a bladed article. He has been remanded in custody and will appear at Southern Derbyshire Magistrates Court tomorrow.
Derbyshire Police confirmed Ponnachan is originally from India but has lived in the UK for several years.
Investigation and Community Reaction
“This incident has sent shockwaves through Derby and the county,” said Chief Superintendent Emma Aldred. “My thoughts remain with the injured, their families, and witnesses. We thank everyone who assisted our investigation. While today’s charges bring reassurance, our inquiries continue.”
The Crown Prosecution Service confirmed sufficient evidence has been gathered to pursue criminal proceedings.
Derbyshire Police are working with Counter Terrorism colleagues but are keeping an open mind on motives. The incident is not currently being treated as terrorism.
Police Appeal for Witnesses
There is no ongoing risk to the public. Officers are urgently asking anyone with footage or information to come forward to assist the investigation.
Photos circulating showed people lying injured on the pavement and road. Victims were taken to Royal Derby Hospital and Queen’s Medical Centre in Nottingham.
