A farmer from Ramsey, Cambridgeshire, was left with a staggering 12 tonnes of potatoes after a last-minute cancellation from a fish and chip shop. Luke Abblitt, who has been farming since 2011 and grows potatoes, sugar beet, and barley, had pre-packed 540 bags of Sagitta spuds intended for delivery. The order was pulled at short notice, leaving the stock close to its expiration date and forcing Luke to act quickly to avoid waste.

Order Pulled At Last Minute

Luke Abblitt, known locally as ‘Farmer Luke’, had prepared the potatoes for the chip shop but was hit by the cancellation just days before delivery. This comes amid struggling conditions for many in agriculture and the food service industry.

Rising Costs Hit Demand

Luke explained the tough market conditions, saying, “People are feeling the pinch and buying less. Rising fuel and energy costs make it harder for fish and chip shops, too. It’s a perfect storm in some ways.” The cancelled order was only the second large one lost in five months, with demand drying up since December.

Turning Waste Into Charity

Determined to avoid waste, Luke has been donating large quantities of potatoes to local food banks and charities. On Friday 24 April alone, he handed out half a tonne of spuds free of charge. He said: “I’m trying to donate it to the legit charity and people who really need them.” He has been careful to avoid unofficial requests from those hoping to resell the produce.

Farming Faces Uncertain Future

Luke described the challenges facing tenant farmers and the broader agriculture sector: “It is a tough life to be in at the minute, and it’s just getting tougher. Sometimes when I lie in bed at night, I think that I might be the last generation of farmers for my family.”
