Eldorado returns! BBC’s cult soap makes surprise comeback after 31 years

The cult BBC soap Eldorado is back on our screens for the first time since it was axed in 1993. The sun-soaked drama, which first hit TV in 1992, earned a devoted fanbase despite only lasting a year. Now fans can catch all the action from Monday, January 21 on UKTV’s U&Drama channel.

A Second Chance for Eldorado

Eldorado was originally launched as a daring rival to EastEnders, set in the made-up Spanish town of Los Barcos on the Costa Eldorado. It followed the twisting lives of British and European expats battling romance, culture clashes, and seaside scandals.

Though the show bombed in ratings and was cancelled after just 12 months, it never quite faded from memory. Reruns on UK Gold in the late 90s and early 2000s kept fans hooked. And a 2021 stint on the now-defunct BritBox streaming service reignited that passion, proving the soap’s loyal following is alive and kicking.

The Legacy of a TV Oddity

Created by Tony Holland, the co-creator of EastEnders, Eldorado struggled to find its feet but left viewers with unforgettable scenes. The final episode featured lead character Marcus, played by Jesse Birdsall, narrowly escaping death after his car was bombed. He sailed off into the sunset with his girlfriend – a classic soap send-off.

The cast also featured future EastEnders stars Derek Martin and Polly Perkins, adding an extra layer of TV trivia for fans.

Fans Ready for a Nostalgia Trip

As the January relaunch approaches, excitement among Eldorado fans is building fast. UKTV’s decision to bring the show back underlines how much affection the drama still commands decades later.

Whether you’re a seasoned viewer craving a hit of 90s nostalgia or new to the saga, Eldorado promises sunshine, suspense, and soap operatic fun this winter.
