A prison officer at HMP Whitemoor in Cambridgeshire has been sentenced to prison for having an improper relationship with a murder convict. Rebecca Green, 29, was found guilty of wilful misconduct in public office after she formed a relationship with John Otugade, serving a 25-year sentence for murder, beginning in October 2022.

Secret Relationship Exposed

Green’s relationship with Otugade came to light in spring 2023 after suspicions prompted an internal meeting. While she denied wrongdoing at first, the authorities moved Otugade to HMP Belmarsh during their investigation.

Evidence Found In Phone Search

Police officers searched Green’s car and mobile phone, uncovering messages that confirmed the relationship. Additionally, Otugade had added a number to his approved contacts labelled “partner,” which matched Green’s phone number.

Guilty Plea And Sentence

Rebecca Green, from Market Rasen Way, Holbeach in Lincolnshire, pleaded guilty at Cambridge Crown Court. On 24 June, she was sentenced to one year and four months behind bars for wilful misconduct in a public office.
