£20,000 Reward for Clues in 31-Year-Old Brixton Teen Murder
The Metropolitan Police have reopened a cold case, offering a £20,000 reward for information on the brutal stabbing of 18-year-old James Akinwande. The tragic killing happened 31 years ago in Brixton, and police are desperate for leads that could bring justice at last.
Nightclub Fight Ends in Tragedy
In the early hours of January 16, 1994, James left the Vox nightclub in Brighton Terrace, Brixton, after a fight broke out. Around 4:45am, near Boots on Brixton Road, he got separated from his friends. A group of young men chased, beat, and stabbed him.
James briefly escaped by shedding his distinctive red and dark blue FILA jacket, but collapsed by a police van on Brixton Road. Officers rushed to give first aid and paramedics took over, but he died from stab wounds to his chest and arm at King’s College Hospital.
Key Evidence: The Stolen FILA Jacket
Police released images of James’ stolen FILA jacket, hoping it will jog memories and help identify the attackers. They urge anyone with info to call 101, quoting Operation Poldark or CAD 1203/16Jan25. Witnesses can also ring the incident room on 0208 785 8267.
Family Plea and Police Promise
“James was a generous, endlessly funny, and positive young man who brightened every room he entered,” said his family. “His murder tore a void in our lives that can never be filled. His mother remains devastated and struggles even to visit his grave. We continue to grieve the life he was cruelly denied.”
Detective Superintendent Katherine Goodwin vowed: “We have not given up hope after 31 years. We’re still searching for the group involved and want to provide James’ family with answers. Anyone involved should know we’re watching. Informants can earn up to £20,000 if their info leads to a conviction.”
If you were at the Vox nightclub that night or remember James’ jacket, contact police now. Help bring justice after three decades of heartbreak.
