26 Arrested in London Clash Over Social Distancing
Police have arrested 26 people for offences including assault on officers and breach of the peace during a tense operation in central London. Among those detained was a woman suspected of carrying a knife, an offensive weapon recovered at the scene.
Officers Target Enforcement as Tensions Flare
The policing operation is ongoing, and the number of arrests is expected to rise. Ten officers sustained injuries during the clashes, though none are reported as serious.
Police Praise Majority, Condemn Minority
Commander Ade Adelekan, who led the operation, said: “The vast majority of people who turned out in central London today adhered to social distancing, engaged with my officers, and left when asked – I thank them for that.
“However, a small minority refused to cooperate despite repeated efforts. We had no choice but to move to enforcement and make arrests.”
“This has been another tough day for officers. We remain in the middle of a global pandemic and have made great progress controlling the virus. We will not allow the selfish actions of a few to jeopardise Londoners’ safety.”
