Four Boys Die After Falling Through Icy Lake in Solihull

Tragic Incident at Babbs Mill Lake

West Midlands Police have confirmed a six-year-old boy has died, becoming the fourth child to lose his life after falling into an icy lake in Solihull on Sunday. The boy was rushed to hospital in critical condition following the accident at Babbs Mill Lake but tragically could not be saved.

Earlier on Monday, police announced the deaths of three other boys aged eight, ten, and eleven who also fell into the freezing water. According to friends, all four children were playing on the icy lake when one boy’s leg broke through the ice. The others tried to rescue him but ended up falling in themselves.

All four boys were found in cardiac arrest and quickly taken to hospital, but sadly none survived.

Community in Mourning

West Midlands Police, firefighters, and paramedics who attended the scene laid floral tributes near Babbs Mill Lake on Tuesday. A police spokesperson said:

“Our hearts go out to the families and friends of those involved in this tragedy. We cannot fathom the magnitude of their anguish. Specialist officers remain in contact with the families, and we will provide further updates as soon as possible. Searches are complete, and the incident site will be cleared this evening.”

Premier League Stars Pay Their Respects

Aston Villa stars Tyrone Mings and John McGinn visited the makeshift memorial on Wednesday near Babbs Mill Park, where hundreds of tributes, cards, flowers, toys, and balloons were left. McGinn, who has lived in Solihull for five years, said:

“It was certainly moving for us, and when we saw John Eustace (Birmingham City’s manager) come down yesterday, Tyrone and I thought it would be great to pay our respects. I’m sure the Villa family will come together and honour this tragic loss at tomorrow’s friendly against Villarreal.”

John Eustace also paid tribute by laying a wreath on behalf of Birmingham City Football Club. Tearful officers who attended the rescue also laid flowers at the lake.

Friends and Community Devastated

Among the fallen was 10-year-old Jack Johnson. A grieving schoolmate said:

“Jack was a friend of mine, and we used to get along well. As soon as I heard the news, I was devastated, like, devastated.”

Another friend, ten-year-old Tommy Barnet, told Sky News:

“They were all playing on the ice when one of them got their legs stuck, then his friends went to save him, but they all drowned. We used to play near the lake in summer, but I wasn’t there on Sunday.”

Tommy added, “It’s so sad, and everyone is waiting to learn more about the boys involved to be sure who they are.”

The community remains in shock after this appalling tragedy at Babbs Mill Lake, as families and friends grieve the loss of four young lives far too soon.
