Met Girds Up for Extinction Rebellion Chaos in City of London
Extinction Rebellion is gearing up to strike the City of London again, sparking a major police operation. The Metropolitan Police are working closely with City of London officers on a high-stakes plan to handle the expected chaos.
Disruption to London’s Daily Grind
Deputy Assistant Commissioner Matt Twist lays it bare: “Extinction Rebellion aims to cause significant disruption through acts of civil disobedience.” This isn’t new. Previous protests snarled bus routes, shut down key roads, and threw tubes and DLR services into disarray. Thousands of officers were pulled from their usual duties just to keep order.
Right to Protest, But Not to Paralyse
DAC Twist is clear about the balance: “Extinction Rebellion have the right to protest, but not to shut down London’s communities or stop people from going about their lawful business.” Over the next two weeks, officers will try to engage with protesters to reduce disruptions.
Strain on Police Resources
Special teams stand ready for protesters who entangle themselves in structures or cause damage. But the scale of this operation means officers pulled away from tackling knife crime, domestic abuse, and violence across London’s boroughs.
“It’s frustrating that Extinction Rebellion’s activity hinders our efforts to fight crime and violence,” DAC Twist said.
City of London Police Chief Superintendent Rob Atkin echoed the warning: “We’ll be on the streets in greater numbers to balance protest rights with protecting residents, workers, and visitors. Our policing plan is ready. We will respond appropriately and proportionately.”
