Tragic Death at O2 Academy Brixton Crowd Surge
Rebecca Ikumelo, 33, has died in hospital following a horrific crowd crush outside the O2 Academy Brixton on Thursday, December 15. The Nigerian Afrobeats singer and songwriter was caught up in chaos as around 3,000 fans surged towards the venue’s entrance, despite the event being sold out.
The London venue, which holds approximately 5,000 people, was overwhelmed by the crowd, forcing the artist, Asake, to cut his show short. Rebecca, from Newham, was among those injured in the crush.
Police Confirm Death, Investigation Underway
The Met Police confirmed: “One of the critically injured has died at hospital on Saturday, 17 December.” Rebecca has been identified as the victim, with specialist officers supporting her family.
A post-mortem is scheduled at Greenwich Public Mortuary on Sunday, December 18.
Asake Speaks Out After Tragedy
Heartbroken Asake released a statement saying:
“I am devastated by the news that Rebecca Ikumelo, who was in critical condition since Thursday, has sadly passed away. My sincerest condolences to her loved ones at this time. Please keep her family in our thoughts and prayers. I’ve talked to them and will continue to talk to them.”
He added, “I am overwhelmed and could never have imagined anything like this happening.” Asake and his team are awaiting a full debrief from the Met Police and urged anyone with information to come forward.
