Bembridge RNLI Spring into Action on New Year’s Day
The Bembridge RNLI crew launched the RNLB Alfred Albert Williams lifeboat at 6:13 pm on New Year’s Day after a desperate call from the UK (Solent) Coastguard. Their target? A 72-foot ex-round-the-world training yacht in trouble near Gilkicker Point.
Yacht in Peril Near Gilkicker Point
The yacht, returning to Portsmouth from Poole with six crew onboard, faced engine failure and was taking on water. Conditions were brutal – Force 7 to 8 winds gusting from the west-southwest and heavy rain making the rescue even trickier.
Seamless Teamwork at Sea
The Gosport & Fareham Inshore Lifeboat was already on scene, having sent a crew member aboard the stricken vessel to offer immediate help. When Bembridge’s lifeboat arrived, the teams combined forces to stabilise the situation.
After assessing the damage, Bembridge RNLI hooked up the yacht for a tow. The original plan to head to Gosport Marina changed mid-rescue, switching course to Gunwharf Marina for safer berthing.
Expert Manoeuvring in Harsh Weather
Once inside Portsmouth Harbour, the lifeboat crew shifted from towing astern to alongside, guaranteeing a smooth and secure arrival at Gunwharf Marina. By 8:30 pm, the RNLB Alfred Albert Williams was safely back at Bembridge, mission accomplished.
“Special thanks to the Gosport & Fareham Inshore Lifeboat crew for their vital support,” the Bembridge team said. “Their teamwork highlights the strength of the maritime rescue community.”
This daring New Year’s Day rescue proves once again that the Bembridge RNLI’s bravery and skill keep lives safe on treacherous seas. Their quick response sets the bar high for maritime safety into 2024.
