Blackshear, Georgia, is mourning the loss of a longtime firefighter after part-time Assistant Fire Chief Vernon “Leon” Davis was tragically killed during Tropical Storm Helene on Friday morning. Davis, who had dedicated over 30 years of his life to firefighting, died when a tree fell on his vehicle, officials confirmed.
Blackshear Police Chief Chris Wright shared with UK News in Picture that Davis had been working to clear downed trees and power lines when the fatal incident occurred. “He had just finished helping the community when the tree fell on his truck,” Wright said.
Davis’ death has deeply affected his fellow firefighters and the broader community. All of the firefighters who worked with Leon said he was a great man,” Wright added, noting that many are struggling to cope with the sudden loss of their colleague and friend.
Davis was well-known in the area for his dedication and service, having spent decades serving the Blackshear Fire Department and supporting the town through various emergencies. His passing marks a heartbreaking chapter in the aftermath of Tropical Storm Helene, which brought severe weather conditions, including heavy rain and strong winds, to the region.
The Blackshear Fire Department and the surrounding community are coming together to remember Davis, a man whose selfless service left a lasting impact on all who knew him.
