The 1 Station Footbridge slammed shut last week after storm damage left it unsafe. Major problems with the roof and wooden steps forced a full closure, causing chaos for locals and rail passengers alike.
Long Detours Cause Headaches for Commuters
What was once a quick shortcut has turned into a tedious trek. Residents are now forced to take a lengthy detour via Fonthill Road and an underpass just to cross the station. Frustration is mounting as disruption drags on.
Storm Damage Far Worse Than First Thought
Early inspections seriously underestimated the damage. Engineers uncovered rotten wooden joints and steps that need complete replacement. Contractors are racing against time with Brighton & Hove City Council and Network Rail to strengthen the bridge and swap out the worn parts.
“I know how inconvenient this is for residents and passengers and how important it is to make it safe and reopen as soon as we can. The bridge is a valued community asset, and this is an opportunity to give it a new lease of life,” said Councillor Trevor Muten, Cabinet Member for Transport and City Infrastructure.
Hove Footbridge Set to Reopen Next Weekend
The repair work is expected to take another week, with a reopening planned by the end of next weekend. Councillor Muten praised the patience of locals and applauded the speedy teamwork of council staff, Network Rail, and contractors M Group (Rail) and HRS (Rail) for tackling the job at pace.
