A major High Street in Chatham remains sealed off after a man armed with a fuel can threatened to cause harm from a block of flats. The tense balcony standoff dragged on for over five hours, with around 30 police officers on the scene.
Man Flees Police Before Threatening Harm
The man, identified as Tony, reportedly fled from officers during a chase earlier in the day. Relatives say he’s under extreme pressure and “not thinking straight,” raising concerns over his mental state.

Firefighters in Chatham were on standby with hoses ready to tackle any flare-ups. Armed officers equipped with riot shields and a police dog added to the intense security presence.
Hostage Situation Ends in Early Hours
Tensions escalated as Tony’s partner’s sister-in-law was inside the same third-floor flat. Just after 12:30am on Friday, police entered the building and escorted Tony out. He was then driven away in a police van. It remains unclear if he has been formally arrested. Kent Police have been contacted for comment.
