Chaos at Brixton O2 Academy Leaves Four Fighting for Their Lives
Police rushed to the O2 Academy in Brixton at 9.35pm on Thursday, December 15 after crowds tried to force their way inside the venue on Stockwell Road, SW9.
Crushing Injuries Spark Major Emergency
Officers, London Ambulance Service, and London Fire Brigade found several people injured, believed to be crushed in the chaos. Eight victims were rushed to hospital, with four in critical condition. Two others suffering less serious injuries were treated at the scene.
Investigation Underway as Police Hold Scene
Detectives from Specialist Crime are leading a full investigation. Police have set up cordons and are still on site, but no arrests have been made yet.
Commander Ade Adelekan, Met Police Gold Commander, said: “This is an extremely upsetting incident which has left four people critically ill in hospital. My thoughts and prayers are with them and their families. A thorough investigation is underway – we will examine the scene, review CCTV, and speak to every witness. Officers will remain in Brixton to reassure the community. Anyone with information should come forward.”
Police Urge Caution Over Social Media Footage
Commander Adelekan also warned against sharing graphic videos online that could distress victims’ families. “Where force was used by police, officers will be held accountable. The Met’s Directorate of Professional Standards is reviewing all footage, including Body Worn Video from officers at the scene. Despite rumours, no police kettling was deployed,” he added.
Witnesses yet to speak to police should call 101 with reference 6725/15Dec. Mobile phone footage can also be sent via @MetCC on Twitter. Further details on submitting evidence will follow.
