Massive Explosion Rocks Turkish Grain Silos Near Port
A powerful blast tore through the grain silos close to Derince port in western Turkey, injuring at least 12 people. State media confirmed three victims are in serious condition following the dramatic explosion.
Wheat Dust Explosion Suspected
The explosion struck near the Turkish Grain Board (TMO) silos around 2:40 pm local time (11:40 am UK). Kocaeli Governor Seddar Yavuz revealed early findings point to compressed wheat dust igniting during grain transfer from a ship to the silos. He said:
“Initial evaluations show that an explosion occurred due to wheat dust compression during the transfer of wheat from a ship to the silo.”
Authorities remain cautious and are investigating all possible causes.
Swift Rescue and Damage Update
Emergency teams including health workers, fire brigade, and search and rescue rushed to the scene. Governor Yavuz confirmed:
“We quickly rescued our friends from the scene and sent them to health institutions with ambulances as soon as possible.”
So far, 10 injured have been treated, with two in a serious but stable state. The blast damaged 13 silos and nearby structures, according to the Turkish Grain Board.
No Ships Damaged, Investigation Underway
Videos shared on social media show a huge cloud of smoke billowing from the site. The Ministry of Transportation confirmed no vessels were harmed in the explosion. Meanwhile, police have launched a full investigation as technical experts probe the exact cause.
