Man Dies After Fire Traps Him Inside Wigan Property

Detectives are hunting for answers after a man in his 40s died from injuries sustained when he was trapped in a fire at a Wigan property. The victim has been named as Mark Vernal.

Emergency Services Called to Early Morning Blaze

Firefighters rushed to Dumbarton Green, Wigan, just after 6:40am on Wednesday, August 14, 2024. They found Mr Vernal trapped inside the burning building with severe, life-threatening injuries.

Despite swift hospital treatment, Mark Vernal sadly passed away.

Murder Probe Launched as Fire Treated as Suspicious

Greater Manchester Police have opened a murder investigation. They are treating the fire as suspicious and have appealed for witnesses or anyone with information to step forward.

Detective Chief Inspector John Davies said: “This is a heartbreaking incident, and our thoughts are with Mark Vernal’s family and friends at this incredibly difficult time. We are committed to finding out what happened and bringing those responsible to justice.”

Forensic teams remain at the scene, combing the site for evidence as detectives follow all leads.
